Here’s a fun fact! Did you know that Pepto Bismol can give you a black tongue??
“The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol contains bismuth. When a small amount of bismuth combines with trace amounts of sulfur in your saliva and gastrointestinal tract, a black-colored substance (bismuth sulfide) is formed. This discoloration is temporary and harmless. It can last several days after you stop taking Pepto-Bismol.”
Weird, right? So my tongue is black today and that’s why! Glad it’s not going to fall off or something because I thought I was majorly diseased.
** Correction. Apparently this picture is not what pepto tongue looks like but it’s a worse, grosser condition that I can’t even say the name of cause it’s so gross. Okay, it’s “black hairy tongue” but that is not what I have – I have pepto tongue, but I thought the image illustrated nicely how I thought my tongue looked when I was freaking out.

dOod, or dOodette! – thank you for this post! i thought i was “majorly diseased” as well! I had an upset stomach last night from a funky burger in the afternoon and all my friend had in their medicine cabinet was Pepto. I ate it, slept, and woke up spitting black, so I was like, wtf!?, looked at my tongue, saw the black, freAked out!, scrubbed my damn tongue as if it was my dog and he’d just rolled in dead animal again, hit the internet, found your picture first, almost puked, went back a page, looked at other “black hairy tongue” shtuff, almost puked (2x), and worried in wonder all day. Then i showed my friend this page and after 2 seconds, the second time around, saw that you had written in there the whole time that Pepto could do this to you! whew!!! yuck. thank you. =)

I had a black tongue several years ago, went to the doctor and he didn’t know the cause! a friend told me that it happens when you suck menthol and I was addicted to it, it disappeared when I stopped.

OMG. I was just brushing my teeth and noticed the same damned thing. I looked on Mayo Clinic and saw that there is a bacteria related ailment accompanied by hair. I didn’t have to shave my tongue. I was not satisfied with the description on MayoClinic and when I googled “black tongue” I found your defininition. Thanks. When my wife saw it I thought she was going to cry. She wanted to rush me to ER right away (she’s like that).
