I’ve been fascinated with animated gifs recently. I think some in the contemporary/digital/techie art community are beginning to regard animated gifs as an early digital folk-art and/or art media that should be preserved and cultivated.

Here’s a dealer talking about selling animated gifs at Armory 2011.
The New Museum hosted a discussion on digital folklore, including animated gifs earlier this year.
Internet scholars such as Olia Lialina write analyses and cultural interpretations of the earliest gifs
I’ve been spending my afternoon playing with gif stuff. 3Frame is a great website/app that allows you to make animated gifs easily with your phone or webcam. This is seriously my new favorite phone app. I had some fun with it this afternoon running around the streets when the rain let up.

Also Blingee is always fun.
